Richmond Fave: Croaker Spot

Whenever I’m in the 804 after having not been there in a long time, I always make a plan to hit up one of my favorite restaurants: Croaker Spot. Located at 1020 Hull St, Richmond, VA (they have other locations in SE VA), be sure to plan ahead if you’re heading there for dinner, on the weekends, or during graduation season. There’s a variety of menu option catering to southern soul food palates (except fried chicken 🙃) such as fried fish and seafood (on a plate or a sandwich), pasta, baked chicken options, and more. Every time I think I’m going to try something different I always resort to my goto: the Famous Fish and Shrimp Fry (~$19.99).

Filled with flavors that will keep your taste buds excited with each bite, this dish comes with three pieces of fried fish with peppers and onions, fried shrimp (as the name suggests), with cabbage and cheddar grits as standard sides, and a piece of cornbread. I like to get my peppers and onions on the side as to keep the fish crispy as I dive in. I usually eat from this dish twice so I’m always asking for a to-go box no matter how little I eat throughout the day in preparation for this meal.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is chill but can be a bit of a tight space when they’re crowded so #packyourpatience if you’re not a fan of a lot of people in confined places. There have been occasions where I’ve tried other things on the menu and I don’t think you can go wrong with anything that’s prepared at this restaurant. If you are a lover of soul food and haven’t been to Croaker Spot, I suggest you make arrangements the next time you’re in Richmond, Petersburg, or Norfolk, VA!
